Summer Internship Profile
I. Description
The Grotius Centre for International Legal Studies is seeking an intern for the position of Project Assistant to support the programme and research activities in The Hague.

This internship provides an excellent opportunity for a student/young professional to familiarise him/herself with current policy and legal issues on the field of international justice, to explore and expand his/her international justice network in The Hague, and to gain relevant experience for an international career in either the academic or professional sphere.
The Grotius Centre for International Legal Studies seeks to develop and disseminate international law by connecting state-of-the-art expertise with academic research and high – quality courses for students, researchers and professionals. The Grotius Centre for International Legal Studies houses a variety of research and training activities and programs, covering all aspects of international law, at the highest levels of academia. The academic expertise of Leiden University is paired to the everyday practice of the various international legal organisations in The Hague, such as the International Criminal Court (ICC), the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY), the International Court of Justice (ICJ), and the Permanent Court of Arbitration (PCA).

The Project Assistant will make a substantial contribution to the organisation of all of the activities of the Grotius Centre for International Legal Studies. An overview of upcoming activities can be obtained on our website www.grotius.org. The intern will report to the General Coordinator and relevant Project Officer. The summer internship will be full or part-time for a period of 3-4 months, starting date as soon as possible. Please note the internship is unpaid. The intern will be provided with working space and – when workload allows – will be allowed free access to the summer schools and events.

Although we welcome applications by non-EU citizens/non permanent residents, they must show appropriate authorization to work in the EU. The Grotius Centre for International Legal Studies cannot sponsor individuals applying for internships to help them obtain visas nor provide accommodation in The Hague.

II. Responsibilities
The Project Assistant will, inter alia, be asked to:
• develop his/her organisation skills by providing assistance in the management and organisation of conferences and summer schools;
• develop his/her communication and drafting skills in helping in the design and preparation of content for the planned new website of the Grotius Centre for International legal Studies;
• develop his/her administrative skills through management of the registration and communication process for conference participants, preparation of background materials and other conference support. Supervisors will make a concerted effort to ensure that there is a balance of programmatic and research-related work.

III. Qualifications
Candidates should have
• good planning and organisational skills and the ability to work independently;
• advanced drafting skills and a good command of the English language;
• a demonstrated interest in international justice or international criminal law;
• good command of MS Office programmes (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access).
As having an asset, we consider candidates with:
• previous working experience in an international court or tribunal, a legal research centre or an NGO;
• a Master or Bachelor degree in Law, Political Science, International Relations, or a related field;
• enthusiasm for future research or practice in the field of international justice;
• proficiency in speaking the French language;
• previous experience with website development.

The deadline for applications for summer internships is 18 May April 2009. After 18 May, applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis for possible fall internships. Only short-listed individuals will be invited for an interview. No phone calls, please.
