EC faces difficulties fighting the climate changes measures

Stavros Dimas, the EU environment commissioner, said a target to boost biofuel production risked causing more damage than EC realized. A number of recent studies are warning that biofuels are the maim reason for the constantly rising food products prices, and vast areas of rainforest are cleared to grow them, as BBC ascertains. On its side the “Guardian” writes, that the greenhouse emission quotas might cause withdrawal of investors from the European Union.

Stavros Dimas, the EU environment commissioner acnowlidged that, a better option for the EC’s pledge for biofuels to make up 10% of European transport fuel is that it should not be fulfilled according to the schedule. The European Comission is planning for new measures to account the ecological and the economic factors. Dimas explained that the alterations in the sustainable development plan will account for the dangerous impact on the rainforests in Indonesia and also upon the food products prices, in a way to avoid a negative impact coming from the competition with USA. Washington has also decided to enhance the biofuel output.
At the same time the, economists are warning about the EU imposed serious greenhouse quotas limitations affecting the industrial development in the 27 countries. In compliance with that, Bulgaria and Romania, as well as part of the countries that joined EU in 2004, lodged complaints to the European Court against these limitations. Further discussion on the climate change measures aims at emissions reducing with 20% till 2020.The European plan concerns 43% of the emissions produced by European enterprises.
