The new Commissioner designated Mrs. Androula Vassiliou will be subject to a hearing before the European Parliament
On Tuesday 1 April 2008, in room PHS 01A02 MEPs from several Committees will hold a hearing to esteem the state of preparedness with Mrs. Vassiliou. Bilyana Raeva, who has been nominated to represent the Committee on employment and social affairs, is posing two questions concerning the future work of Mrs. Vassiliou regarding demographical challenges, the European citizens’ health status, the cross-border health services, the coordinated reform in the pensioning, the insurance and the health care systems in Europe.
Being responsible for health, food safety and animal welfare, Mrs Vassiliou will be subject to a hearing before the Committee on the Environment, Public Health and Food Safety of the European Parliament. In preparation of the hearing Mrs Vassiliou is asked to answer a written questionnaire drawn up by the relevant parliamentary committees.
The Committee on Agriculture and Rural Development, the Committee on the Internal Market and Consumer Protection and the Committee on Employment and Social Affairs will also participate.
The hearing will last three hours and will begin with an opening statement by Mrs Vassiliou followed by a question and answer session. Based on the outcome of the hearing the European Parliament will proceed to a formal vote in plenary.
Following his nomination as Foreign Minister of Cyprus, on 28 February 2008 Mr. Markos Kyprianou submitted his resignation as member of the European Commission responsible for Health. The Cypriot government notified its intention to designate Mrs Androula Vassiliou as new Commissioner. On 29 February 2008, the Council of the European Union decided by written procedure to appoint Mrs Vassiliou member of the European Commission from 3 March 2008 to the end of the current Commission’s term of office, on 31 October 2009.
