Being the Chairperson to the EP Delegation for relations with Switzerland, Iceland and Norway and to the EEA, the Member of the European Parliament Bilyana Raeva is taking part in the eighth Conference of Parliamentarians of the Arctic Region, Fairbanks, the United States of America, 12-14 August 2008. This Conference is held every two years, with the participation of elected representatives from the National Parliaments of Canada, Denmark/Greenland, the European Parliament, Finland, Iceland, Norway, Russia, Sweden, and the United States of America.
The main items for the Meeting to discuss are maritime policy, human health, renewable energy, and adaptation to climate change in the Arctic region.
A supplementary delegation of the Group of the Liberals and the democrats for Europe (ALDE), who’s Member in the European Parliament is Ms Raeva, is going to take part in the Conference, as the climate change item is of a great priority for the Group and the problem undergoes a breathtaking speed development namely in the Arctic Region. The group has organized meetings in the International Research Centre and in the North Alaska Environment Centre.
The last Interparliamentary Conference on Arctic cooperation has been held in Kiruna, Sweden, in 2006. The Standing Committee of the Arctic Region Parliaments, being responsible to organize the activities between the conferences, started its work in 1994. The Conference and the Standing Committee are taking initiatives to deepen the process of Arctic cooperation and to play the role of a Parliamentary forum on items concerning the Arctic Council.
